POSITION: Library Technician
Youth Services Aide

Sandpoint Branch Library
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Under supervision of the Youth Services Coordinator. Maintains Youth Services area as well as Young Adult reading area.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
• Monitors children in the youth area.
• Assisting parents with searching readers’ advisory databases and other internet searches.
• Responsible for the physical maintenance of children’s and Young Adult areas in the Library, including shelving, shelf reading, wall & shelf displays, picking up toys, library materials, etc.
• Attends meetings, conferences, and other pertinent continuing education activities.
• Other duties as needed or assigned.
• May assist in preparing materials for programs and craft projects.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• Highly developed and consistently applied customer service skills required.
• Must be highly dependable in attendance and punctuality, and occasionally flexible in terms of scheduling.
• Ability and willingness to learn about literacy, early literacy and children’s literature.
• Knowledge of, or ability to learn and practice classroom management techniques.
• Ability to communicate effectively with library staff, volunteers, and patrons of all ages, education levels and socio-economic backgrounds.
• Personal initiative, motivation, positive attitude, sense of humor, and an ability to work as part of a team as well as alone.
• Basic keyboarding and computer skills. Ideal candidate will have an interest in technology.
• Ability to navigate internet search engines, use word processing software, scheduling software and email.
• Knowledge of alphabetical and numerical filing systems, and the ability to learn library policies/procedures.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions; and work effectively and efficiently with little supervision.
• Ability to advocate for children’s interests while maintaining support for the Library district’s policies.
• Ability to perform the physical requirements. These may include, but are not limited to: standing/walking for extended durations; climbing/descending step stools; frequently grasping, handling, keyboarding; lifting and carrying objects weighing 1 to 30 pounds and rarely up to 50 pounds; pushing/pulling book carts containing library materials—requires about 25 pounds of exertion to initiate movement and 10 to 15 pounds of exertion to sustain movement; bending, stooping, kneeling and reaching shelves at floor level and overhead.
• Speech, vision, touch and hearing are required, as is ability to identify certain colors.
• Ability to accurately read small letters and numbers rapidly.
• Ability to drive to locations away from the Sandpoint branch is highly desirable.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
• Familiarity with literacy, early literacy and children’s literature is also desirable. Ability and willingness to become familiar is required.
• Must have unrestricted driver’s license and clean driving record.
• Upon beginning employment, selected applicant must verify employment eligibility by providing documentation that satisfies requirements of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services I-9 form.
• Selected applicant must pass criminal background check (at library expense).

SUPERVISOR: Youth Services Coordinator
WAGE: $12.00/ hour. Pro-rated personal leave, sick leave and holiday pay
BEGINNING DATE: April 26, 2021
SCHEDULE: 19 hours/week—Days and hours are somewhat negotiable.
Agreed upon schedule may be adjusted occasionally to fulfill
programming needs.
Monday 1:00 pm. to 7:00 p.m. (6 hours)
Wednesday 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (6 ½ hours)
Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (6 1/2 hours)
